My sister

Today has been a hard one. My sister, who has known for a while that she has MS, called to tell me what the latest tests showed. Her one small brain lesion has escelated to 9. They are affecting her memory now. She told me that now she realizes that she really will soon be a vegetable, and I now realize this too. It is much easier to pretend it isn't so, to put the finality of it all far into a distant future. She told me that she is tired of being sick, and really just wants to die.

She and her twin daughters have been living in a shack with no refrigerater or air conditioning. The girls are both learning disabled and grossly obese. They have tried working, but cannot pass a driving test or function successfully enough to keep a job. They have reached the age where they lost the social security they received as children of a disabled person. They have applied for adult benefits. One qualified. The other has been denied twice and is in it's second appeal. I may not be a government doctor or decision maker, but I know this kid can not do it on her own!

Not too long ago, my brother brought my sister a camping trailer. Her dream was to own a pickup and camper and travel to the gold fields to find her fortune. Our father was a rock hound and we all love to go out into the wilds and see what we find! She dreamed that when the kids were grown, she could do this! She has tried to provide for her kids by getting them a vehicle and she needed one to pull the trailer. She was so happy just two months ago.

Now she cannot go. Tomorrow they are coming to repossess her truck. Wednesday we are going to get her and her trailer and bring her here to rest.

My family so wants to help her. Financially, we cannot. My brother lost everything in Katrina. He had to start over in his sixties. My other sister and her husband are living on what's left of her husband's oil company stock retirement. I am trying to build a ranch business for my retirement. We are not able to help her much. I want to give her a peaceful place, where she can know that someone will take care of her as she needs it.

What kind of help from you am I asking for? I don't really know! Prayers for one thing. Prayers for strength, for right decisions, for mercy and peace.

I hate asking for money. It goes against my values and pride. It is easier to ask you to help her. We don't know how we can afford to hook up her trailer, but I have faith it will happen. We have food, that is not hard on a farm. I just want to make her days better.

Please email suggestions to my email. I will forward anything legitimate to her. I will send her address to anyone who will help her.

I do know that the world is full of good people. I also know that this will probably bring out some people who are not so good. So I will first be skeptical of anyone who answers and will investigate to see how legitimate you are. It is just how you have to be in the world today.

So, I want to thank you now. God bless you.

They call me ma, so...

ma
